I've been selling real estate in Barrie and Simcoe County for years, and I'll be honest — when this ranking dropped, I wasn't surprised. I was thrilled, but not surprised.

A new study by Toronto-based digital marketing agency dNOVO Group just revealed their Best Cities to Live in Canada for 2026, analyzing 28 of the country's largest cities on three core categories: livability, financial security, and safety. The results put Barrie, Ontario at #2 in the entire country — sitting on the shores of Lake Simcoe, less than two hours from Toronto. And here's the headline that every GTA buyer needs to hear: Toronto ranked dead last with a score of zero. As dNOVO's spokesperson put it, "The best quality of life in Canada right now is hiding in smaller cities."

Barrie isn't hiding anymore.

What Makes Barrie Canada's #2 City?

The study evaluated cities on local attractions, cost of living, average rent, and safety index. Barrie scored across all of them — and anyone who has spent time here already knows why.

Set along the western shores of Kempenfelt Bay on Lake Simcoe, Barrie offers something that Toronto simply cannot — a genuine waterfront lifestyle with city amenities attached. We're talking about a vibrant downtown, excellent schools, four-season outdoor recreation, GO Transit connectivity, and Highway 400 running straight through the city connecting you north to cottage country and south toward the GTA.

The numbers back it up. (Source: Zolo, March 2026 / Narcity, March 2026)

  • Average house price in Barrie: $671,496

  • Average house price in Toronto: $1,041,163

  • Monthly living expenses in Barrie: $1,434.38

  • Monthly living expenses in Toronto: $1,535.22

That's nearly $370,000 less for a home, and lower monthly costs on top of it. For GTA buyers who have been priced out, watching their commute eat their life, or simply craving space and a lake view — Barrie is the answer that the data just confirmed publicly.

Two Markets in One City — Waterfront and Residential

What most people outside of Barrie don't realise is that you're not choosing between a city and a cottage. You're getting both in the same postal code.

Barrie Waterfront — Kempenfelt Bay is one of the most stunning stretches of Lake Simcoe shoreline in the region. Waterfront properties here range from luxury estates with private docks and deep water frontage to 4-season chalets and beautifully renovated bungalows steps from the water. These properties offer everything a cottage buyer wants — lake access, boating, fishing, paddleboarding, winter skating — without the weekend drive. You live here full time and the lake is your backyard every single day.

Barrie Residential — Away from the water, Barrie is a full-service city with established family neighbourhoods, new developments, strong schools, and a downtown that keeps getting better. For buyers relocating from the GTA, the value proposition is extraordinary. The same budget that buys a condo in Toronto buys a detached home in Barrie with a backyard, a garage, and a short walk to the waterfront trail.

Both markets are moving. The spring of 2026 is shaping up to be active, and a national ranking like this one only accelerates buyer interest in a market that was already gaining momentum.

What This Ranking Means If You're Thinking of Buying

Publicity like this does one thing to a real estate market — it brings buyers. When a city gets named Canada's #2 best place to live, searches spike, interest grows, and competition increases for the best properties. I've seen it happen before.

If you've been sitting on the fence about Barrie — whether you're a GTA professional looking to relocate, a retiree chasing the lake lifestyle, or an investor looking for a market with long-term fundamentals — this is your signal to move before the crowd does.

Currently Available in Barrie — 4 Trillium Crescent

Speaking of moving fast — I have an active listing right now in Barrie that perfectly captures what makes this city so compelling for buyers in 2026.

4 Trillium Crescent offers a rare 5-bedroom layout with a full in-law suite featuring a separate entrance — the kind of versatile, multi-generational floor plan that is becoming one of the most sought-after features in the current market. Whether you need space for family or want to offset your mortgage with a rental income stream, this property delivers both.

In a city just ranked #2 in Canada, in a spring market that's already moving — this is the kind of property that doesn't sit around. Take a look and reach out directly if you'd like to book a showing.
